Marquetry is essentially the craft of entirely covering a structural carcass with veneer forming decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The result may be furniture, decorated small objects or free-standing pictures. It should not be confused with the much more ancient craft of inlay in which a solid body of one material is cut out to receive sections of another. Inlay may equally be of metal inlaid in metal. The ability to consider grain direction or pattern as well as shape and colour in pictures make this a fascinating craft for the amateur and specialist alike.
